Miniature hand carved sculptures
TIKIS - Miniature hand carved sculptures worn as pendants, amulets, charms, talismans and adornment.
My work is inspired by travels around the world where I have visited art galleries and museums with strange beautiful artifacts, primitive sculptures, carved weapons and utensils, paintings, Japanese Netsukes, Polynesian amulets, Maori talismen, Viking and Celtic jewelry, Oriental, Balinese and Indian art work created by the ancients and moderns. Because no private individual can possess any of these museum pieces, I create my own.
Each one of my sculptured Tikis is different and possesses within it hidden power, or 'mana' that accumulates over time. I use found pieces of roots, driftwood,- scraps found in the bush, woodpiles or beaches, anything I can from almost anywhere, selecting wood that has the most interesting shape and grain. I begin by carving away unusable material and work towards a new radical shape that is suggested by the original found piece of wood.
To live up to the inherent beauty of the wood, I work carefully by hand, down from gouges, rasps and knives, to small Japanese chisels and finely graded Italian needle files. I hand-sand each piece, working through to 220 grit sandpaper, and then finally, I hand rub and buff the finish with 3 coats of Tung oil, also known as China wood oil.
The best pieces will resemble ripples in sunlit water or gleam like the coat of a well-groomed animal. This whole process of mine is a very time consuming, passionate endeavor, and offensive to all machines. To do less would rob the wood of its potential to live again in a new form, and would cheat you of one of nature's fine gifts. Treat your sculptured Tiki with Aloha!
